I have a Bachelor of Science in English Education with an extended major in English. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Northern Arizona University. I also have a full Gifted Endorsement.

About Mrs. Harkema

I am an Arizona native, and I have lived here my whole life. I graduated from Horizon High School in 2001, and then I headed up north to Northern Arizona University to pursue a degree in Secondary English Education with an Extended Degree in English. I loved my time at NAU and Flagstaff will always be a special place for me. Go Jacks! 

I started teaching at DVHS in 2005, and I have loved every minute of it because this school is truly my second family. I have taught every grade level of secondary Language Arts including 7th grade through 12th grade, and I also taught Creative Writing and Communications. I am thrilled to be teaching AP Seminar/ELA 3-4 Honors. 

I coached JV softball for 4 years, Varsity and JV Badminton for 3 years, and I was the assistant coach for Academic Decathlon for 2 years. I also have several years of experience teaching ELA and ELA Honors for the Deer Valley Online Learning Program. I have been the sponsor for the Sophomore DV Scholars program since 2019.

Some of my favorite things are reading memoirs, buying anything with a pug on it, running, drinking coffee, stalking Crumble Cookie on social media, and hanging out with my husband and 2 children.
