Mrs. McGowan
I use Canvas to deliver and collect most assignments for classes; this is a user-friendly learning management system that allows kids to access and turn in work 24 hours a day. Parents can easily access Canvas by creating a parent account (all you need is your student's username and ID!). For assignments that are not on Canvas or for help understanding an assignment, please contact me via email at alison.mcgowan@dvusd.org. If you are a student who is worried about using Canvas, stop worrying! I'm an expert and will help you every step of the way. After a few times, you'll be an expert too.
Electronic copies of each course's syllabus will be posted here at the beginning of each school year.

About Mrs. Alison McGowan
Greetings! I've been a Skyhawk since 2005 and every year has been better than the year before. I've taught Sophomore English, Junior English, Senior English, Communications, Creative Writing, Journalism, Newspaper, Digital Communications, AP Research, and Creative Media. I particularly love teaching upper classmen, but I'll take anyone who has a good sense of humor. My teaching philosophy is that we should make the most of free, quality, public education; we should do something or learn something every single day of school. That doesn't mean school shouldn't be fun though!
For part of the day, I teach Creative Media. Working with students to produce photos, news stories, and films is an adventure every single day and nothing is more satisfying than seeing students have their work published.
I am also the department chair for English Language Arts and teach junior English for the other part of the day, so I can say with certainty that Deer Valley High School has assembled a talented, creative, and caring group of English teachers. Our shared goal is to successfully guide our kids on their path to becoming highly skilled readers, writers, and communicators.
